Annexation Policies of the English
The English devised two instruments to annex the Indian territories. These were
(i) Doctrine of Lapse, and
(ii) Subsidiary Alliance
Doctrine of Lapse
It was devised by Lord Dalhousie, according to which if the ruler of a protected state died without leaving a natural heir, his adopted son was not allowed to rule. His state was to be annexed by the British.
The Revolt of 1857
The revolt of 1857 was the result of the culmination of large scale discontent that has been accumulating for a long time against the policies of the British in India. It was the result of certain deep-rooted causes, though its immediate cause was provided by Indian soldiers.
